Newberg’s best kept secret

Located on east-bound Hwy 99-w in downtown Newberg, Storrs Smokehouse is traditional barbecue with an Oregon tone from Pitmaster Ashlin Indiana Elwood.

Storrs Smokehouse opened its BBQ pit in April 2014. Original owners Jessica Bagley and Allen Routt, of the Painted Lady Restaurant, decided to open up this endeavor as a tribute to Allen’s Southern roots. Since then, pitmaster Ashlin Indiana Elwood has been serving traditionally smoked meats and southern sides while clearing a path for Oregon’s interpretation of barbecue.

Storrs Smokehouse, embracing the phrase ‘hole in the wall’, is down to earth and straightforward, not hiding behind fancy words or extra frills. This is barbecue.  A place for the hard working locals, students and educators, and anyone who wants to feel right at home with mouthwatering meats and the smokey sweet auroma that fills the soul as soon as you enter.

Monthly Highlight

CUBANO & Carolina Gold mustard

For March we’re highlighting one of our signature specials, the Cubano. For this well known sandwich, we cure the pork loin for 7-10 days then smoke it for 4-5 hours, turning it into Canadian bacon. We slather a toasted ciabatta bun in our Carolina Gold mustard, add pickles and layer our Canadian bacon, provolone cheese and pulled pork then smash it hot on our griddle.

“I’ve fallen hard in love with this sandwich over the years. If I see one on a menu I always have to try it, but I’m very bias to our version. Although not fully traditional, we use dill pickles when it should be sweet butter pickles, the flavors are wonderful and I’ve always felt it falls right into our wheelhouse. The Carolina Gold Mustard is what seals the deal for me; sweet, tangy, a touch of heat and the woodsy rosemary paired with two types of smoked pork, DONE. I’ve discovered I really enjoy Carolina style barbecue and while this sandwich originates from Florida, it’s a perfect display of Carolina influences and one that this smokehouse will always bring around on special as apart of our identity.” ~Chef Ashlin Indiana Elwood

Storrs Smokehouse Announces Exciting Ownership Transition

November 11, 2024
Newberg, OR
— Storrs Smokehouse (www.storrssmokehouse.com) is proud to announce the transition of ownership from Allen Routt and Jessica Bagley of The Painted Lady Restaurant (www.thepaintedladyrestaurant.com) to Ashlin Indiana Elwood, who has been an integral part of the Storrs Smokehouse team as manager and head pitmaster for the past six years. This shift marks a new chapter for the beloved smokehouse, dedicated to traditional barbecue and locally inspired flavors.

Routt and Bagley, the founders of Storrs Smokehouse, are thrilled to pass the torch to Ashlin, whose hands-on leadership and passion for quality barbecue have greatly influenced the smokehouse’s success. “Ashlin has been a tremendous force at Storrs Smokehouse, bringing skill, care, and dedication to every aspect of the operation,” said Allen and Jessica. “We know he’ll carry forward the traditions of Storrs Smokehouse while adding his unique touch, and we’re excited to see where he takes it.”

Elwood, who has built a strong connection with both the community and the loyal patrons of Storrs Smokehouse, expressed his excitement about this new journey. “Storrs Smokehouse has become my home; the community here is everything to me. I’m keeping that core menu intact, honoring what makes this place special and the tradition of barbecue,” Ashlin shared. “I’m also excited to continue infusing a bit of Oregon character while bringing new ideas to the table.”

During the transition, Storrs will be closed on November 20th or 21st. Please follow them on Instagram @storrsbbq or visit the website (www.storrssmokehouse.com) for more information about the re-opening.

Storrs Smokehouse will continue to offer the classic smoked meats, house-made sauces, and sides that locals and visitors alike have come to love, with plans for a few updates in the future that align with Elwood’s vision.
